HBCU Professional Development Program
Our History
The HBCU Professional Development Program (HBCU PDP) was created in 2020 in response to a clear and ongoing need: to build stronger connections between the architecture profession and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), where talent, leadership, and innovation continue to thrive. Since its founding, the program has connected over 500 students with more than 40 architecture firms and hundreds of professionals nationwide.
While the HBCU PDP continues to grow in impact and reach, the mission remains the same: to expand opportunity, foster meaningful connections, and strengthen pathways into the architecture profession for students at HBCUs.
We remain committed to:
1. Connecting students and academic programs at HBCUs with leading architecture firms across the country.
2. Supporting students in preparing for and securing entry-level positions through seminars, workshops, and access to professional networks.
3. Building a lasting community of architects and design professionals who guide and
support students throughout their academic and early career journeys.
HBCUs have a proud legacy of producing talented professionals and cultivating unique educational environments. Their architecture programs offer essential foundations in design, innovation, and leadership. Despite their impact, these programs are too often overlooked as sources of emerging talent within the profession.
This program highlights the value of access, preparation, and connection, ensuring that the future of the profession reflects a wide range of perspectives, experiences, and contributions.
